‘Africa as it is’: Türkiye’s state-owned broadcaster launches Somali edition

Turkiye’s public broadcaster TRT has launched a new digital news platform, TRT Somali, to cover the Horn of Africa and other regions of the world in the Somali language as the country seeks to expand its influence and media footprint in Africa.

TRT Somali provides a mix of Somali and international news and joins TRT’s growing portfolio of international channels, including TRT Swahili and TRT Afrika.

“Turkiye once again shows its unwavering support to the Somali people with the establishment of  Somali-language dedicated channel, TRT Somali. The channel under Turkish Radio & Television Corporation (TRT) is among the 45+ languages broadcast in TRT Global network,” the Somali embassy in Ankara said on March 7.

TRT launched TRT Afrika in 2023 as Ankara sought to shape narratives on the continent and foster stronger regional diplomatic ties.

TRT Somali is expected to become a key source of news and storytelling for Somali speakers across the world as Turkiye seeks to solidify its position as a strategic partner with Somalia.
