Sudan military plane crash causes deaths and injuries in Omdurman

An unspecified number of people died and were injured in Sudan late on Tuesday after a military aircraft crashed in the city of Omdurman, according to several media outlets, including the official SUNA news agency.

The Reuters news agency put the death toll at 20, citing army and medical sources.

It said the victims included  Major General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander who was previously in charge of the army in the capital Khartoum.

The news agency added that the incident happened in a resisential area due to technical reasons.

According to SUNA, a spokesperson for the army said the plane crashed as it attempted to take off from the airport in northern Omdurman, adding that civilians and military personnel were killed and injured in the crash.

The incident came amid a civil war that has resulted in a large humanitarian crisis.
