Ukraine officially established diplomatic relations with Somalia on Friday, April 11, during an annual conference on international diplomacy in the Turkish city of Antalya, the Eastern European nation’s foreign minister said on X (formerly).
“Today, we officially established diplomatic relations with Somalia. I signed relevant protocol with Somalia’s state minister for foreign affairs and international cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar,” Andrii Sybiha said.
“We also discussed ways to develop our cooperation. Ukraine has provided assistance to Somalia as part of our grain from Ukraine program and is ready to continue strengthening food security.”
Sybiha added that Kyiv appreciates “Somalia’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
The Ukrainian foreign minister announced the move during the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, which he said was “an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues, including from African countries”.
Somali foreign minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi held a phone call with Mr Sybiha in January to discuss the establishment of diplomatic ties and enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
